About the Role:

UPES invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Astronomy & Astrophysics in the Department of Applied Sciences. We are seeking candidates who are passionate about advancing knowledge in the field, delivering high-quality education, and mentoring students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Development

  • Conduct original, high-quality research in astronomy and astrophysics.
  • Develop and maintain a research program with a focus on securing external funding through grants.
  • Publish research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
  • Collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects with internal and external institutions.

Teaching and Mentoring

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in astronomy, astrophysics, and related areas.
  • Develop and revise curriculum materials to reflect cutting-edge advancements in the field.
  • Supervise and mentor students at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, guiding them in academic and research pursuits.
  • Provide academic advising on course selection, degree requirements, and career planning.

Technical Skills and Competence

  • Utilize and develop astronomical instruments and advanced software tools for research.
  • Apply computational techniques and programming languages (e.g., Python, C++) for data analysis and simulations.
  • Operate in Unix/Linux environments and use tools like LaTeX for documentation and publications.
  • Stay updated on technological advancements and integrate innovative tools into research and teaching.

Collaboration and Networking

  • Engage in collaborative research projects within the department and with external organizations.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations, academic committees, and conferences to enhance the department’s visibility and contribute to the academic community.

Administrative Duties

  • Participate in departmental and university committees to support institutional goals and policy implementation.
  • Contribute to student and faculty recruitment and retention efforts.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong potential for excellence in research, supported by a robust publication record and experience in securing external funding.
  • Commitment to delivering quality education and mentoring at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Proficiency in advanced computational techniques and tools relevant to astronomy and astrophysics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
